Learning to Code with Siobhan

Until relatively recently I stayed away from coding because I was convinced (without ever trying it) that it would be too difficult to learn. I’ve discovered that I’m completely wrong and that, with clear instructions, the less complicated languages are actually very easy to pick up and so I’ve decided to start writing up documentation in a series of how to’s for beginners. The later languages will be progressing at a rate of one to a handful of tags a day as I’ll be learning them with you.

The two resources I recommend are http://www.w3schools.com/ and http://www.codecademy.com/learn Both clearly explain what each command means and give you the opportunity to test out your knowledge. Code Academy is definitely more fun and probably means you’re more likely to remember it but if you want to learn concepts fast W3 is good for that.

This project was inspired by an event at Girl Geek Scotland where one of the instructors mentioned to me that not enough people are writing documentation. If you’re a woman or a trans person of any kind in Scotland and you want to get involved in coding or technology I recommend looking into them as they’re very supportive and helpful.

I'm an archivist living in Edinburgh. I have an undergraduate degree in medieval history and a special interest in early Christian and pre-Christian religion so I'll be talking about that quite a bit. I also cook, so I'll be posting recipes on here when I think of them.
